About Bordoverview

What is Bordoverview?

Bordoverview is an overview of Bordeaux Primeurs. Every year when I was deciding about which wines to purchase, I was going through many many sources of information. The data is everywhere. It takes time to find the desired information, and it takes even more time to compare all wines and finally... come to conclusions!

Bordoverview helps you make quick judgement of the new wines on the market. Besides that, the overview shows you interesting facts such as the size of a property and the brain behind the winemaking. The fact that you can sort everything delivers a lot of interesting information, and a fresh view on this traditional market.

David tasting 2006 at Château Montrose (April 2007)

David Bolomey from Amsterdam. Wine enthusiast and "vinoloog". In September - October 2006 I worked at Château du Tertre for some weeks, learning about vinification. In order not to forget the valuable lessons that I got from Du Tertre's cellar master David Fennelly, I wrote a summary about this work experience. Which I like to share with those people who are interested, for whatever reason. The story contains the (more or less technical) basics on vinification. Click here to download the PDF-document to your computer.

On 15 October 2007 I started the Bordoverview Blog. With this blog I want to add something dynamic and interactive to Bordoverview. Hopefully this blog will attract many new visitors!

New: on Thursday 19 March Bordoverview version 2.0 was released. This new version looks more or less the same, but has much approved functionality. The 2.0 version is built by my old friend Ward van der Put, and for those who are interested he explains in detail what has changed, and how solutions were technically met.

The tasters on Bordoverview

Most people get advice from local connaisseurs, which is fine, but additionally Bordoverview offers you the scores of the most influential tasters from four different countries:

What are Bordeaux Primeurs (or “Futures”)?

Bordeaux Primeurs are wines that are not yet bottled, but can already be purchased. So buyers have to fully rely on information. What do the “experts” say about the different wines? The yearly madhouse around the Primeurs is good for the producers and the trade, because production is sold, and money is collected, in a very early stage. But it can only happen with the participation of the buyers, and for some wines people really fight to get their share.

How should I use this overview?

How does it work? Just move your mouse over the column headers and you will see a text appear with information about the column. Clicking the header will sort the column. Clicking again will sort the column in the other direction. With clicking within the table you filter the information.

Note that the judgements on Bordoverview are limited to the ratings only! It is created to give you a fast & handy overview of the market. But to get the complete picture, you should absolutely dive into the tasting notes, the qualitative parts of the ratings, also. It a/o tells you about the style of the wine. The quoted tasters all have their websites & magazines that are interesting to browse through.

Bordoverview is free. If you like this initiative, you do me a favour by spreading the word! And subscribe to my newsletter (see at the top of each page)!

What price is shown?

The price shown is the average European consumer price in euros including taxes at the time of release of the Primeur. It is the price of the first offers that are made to the end-customers. This first customer-price will mostly be based on the price of the first 'tranche' (release), but — especially for the more popular wines — can also be based on the prices of several tranches that follow one another rapidly in the first few days. For a relatively small amount of much sought after wines the consumer price already raises in an early stage, when additional tranches are sold for a higher price. This higher secondary consumer price is not (yet) shown on Bordoverview. But what you do see in that case, is that the price has gone up already...

But what is an average price? What I did is looking at the prices of at least 3 of the biggest merchants in different countries who sell via the internet, took the highest of these often relatively sharp prices, and rounded it up to the nearest euro. Local merchants can ask one or a few more euros for a bottle, which can be worth paying when their (local) service is taken into account. E.g. it is often possible to have your bottles stored for a longer period of time, for free, or sometimes a modest fee. When you buy en primeur, it is very important to also look at these kinds of conditions! In other words: it is not just the price that counts.

Every effort is taken to ensure prices listed on Bordoverview are accurate, if you encounter what you believe to be a typo, please let me know on info@bordoverview.com.

Is all information 100% correct?

No, I'm sure some consultant has left his employer, or an estate has grown, or something else has changed. If you encounter incorrect information, please let me know. But again, every effort (double checks, using multiple sources etc.) is taken to ensure prices and ratings are accurate!

If you have questions or ideas I would be glad to hear from you.
